Naming & Renaming Ports

Feature Description

Port naming can be accomplished through several mechanisms. This page explains three ways in which port abbreviations can be edited (using the Details panel, the "Quick-Label" method, or from within Grid View). Ports can also be named automatically by letting the software derive port abbreviations from the nets to which they are connected (see Automatic Port Naming using Net Names). Although port abbreviations normally display for selected (highlighted) objects, the names will not display when ports on the same side of an object are placed so closely together that their names would overlap to the point of being unreadable.

How To Explicitly Name or Rename Ports

1
Select the Port  to be named.
2
Choose the Details  tab from the context panels.
3
Change the name by typing or pasting into the abbreviation field on the Details panel.

How to Explicitly Name or Rename Ports (using the "Quick-Label" method)

1
Position the mouse pointer over the port that you wish to name (you do not need to select the port).
2
Type the name. Any typed characters will be appended to the abbreviation of that port (use the backspace key if you wish to remove existing characters).

How to Explicitly Name or Rename Ports (using Grid View)

1
Select the Port(s) to be named (alternatively, select the object(s) that contain the ports to be named).

Alternative: Abbreviations can be modified for all ports by invoking Grid View with nothing selected.
2
Click on the Grid View icon on the View toolbar.
3
If necessary, select "Ports" from the Contents Type drop-box on the Grid Control panel.
4
Edit the label that appears in the Port Abbreviation column for the desired port.

Precautions in Naming & Renaming Ports

There are some potential side effects when more than one port is assigned the same name (see the discussion of Duplicate Port Names).
