Unlinking an assembly removes the object's dependence on a lower-level design, but retains the information that was rolled up from that design. By linking and then unlinking an object, a lower-level design can be used as a template for populating an object without actually including all of the lower-level details in the upper-level design.
Note: Data Source Administration should be used to change the source design to which an assembly is linked. If the Analyst does this by unlinking and relinking the object, some of the upper-level information could be lost.
How to: Unlink an Assembly
Unlinking an assembly is accomplished by converting the assembly back to the type Component. Although you can also convert the assembly into other types to perform the unlinking, the component type is normally the most suitable.
