Navigating Symbol Libraries

Feature Description

The eXpress symbol library structure is navigated by clicking on icons that appear within the Symbol Library toolbar (depicted below). This Analyst can hide this toolbar by disabling "Symbols" in the Toolbar submenu within the View menu (if already hidden, the toolbar can be re-displayed by selecting the same entry in the menu).

Five types of icons appear in the Symbol Library window:

  •
Home icon - clicking on the Home icon (a yellow icon depicting a blue house) resets the Symbol Library window to the root symbol library folder.
  •
Up icon - clicking on the Up icon (a yellow icon depicting an "up" arrow) displays the parent directory of the currently displayed directory.
  •
Folder icons - clicking on a yellow Folder icon displays the directory associated with that folder.
  •
Library icons - clicking on a blue Library icon displays the symbols contained within that library.
  •
Symbol icons (not depicted above) - clicking on a Symbol icon has no effect. Drag-and-drop the symbol into the main design window to create an object or right-click on the Symbol icon to display the pop-up context menu.

Note: Because, by default, the location of the eXpress libraries directory is defined relative to the active directory (the directory from which the eXpress program has been launched), the Symbol Library toolbar will not be filled out with the standard symbol libraries when eXpress is started in a directory other than that in which it has been installed (such as when the Analyst launches the software by double-clicking on a design file). This problem can be circumvented by defining the full path to the "lib" directory on the File Locations panel on the General Options dialog. For standard installations, this path is usually C:\ProgramData\DSI International\eXpress\lib.
